"Belt and Road" Forum for Health Cooperation:
 Towards a Health Silk Road

Concept of the Forum


Since the proposal of Belt and Road Initiative 3 years ago, China have implemented 41 cooperative health projects with the Belt and Road related countries in infectious diseases prevention and control, health emergency, health human resource development, Traditional Chinese Medicine, healthcare system and policy, health development aid, laying the foundation for further cooperation. This May, Chinese President Xi Jinping proposed to build a Health Silk Road on the Belt and Road Forum for International Cooperation (BRF) in Beijing. To put the commitment to actions and further strengthen health cooperation between China and the Belt and Road countries, the “Belt and Road” Forum for Health Cooperation: Towards a Health Silk Road will be held in Beijing on August 18-20, 2017.


This Forum will facilitate dialogues in medicine and health area between Health Ministers, senior officials from national and local health authorities, high level representatives from international health bodies, experts and scholars, delegates of health industry, to share the early harvest, discuss opportunities and challenges, reach consensus on the health cooperation, and find out how Belt and Road health cooperation could contribute to 2030 SDGs.


An Opening Ceremony will be organized on the morning of 18 August 2017 by the National Health and Family Planning Commission (NHFPC) of China. Four thematic sessions, business meetings, roundtables, expo and guided tours will be organized from the afternoon of 18 to 20 August 2017 by the International Health Exchange and Cooperation Center, NHFPC, China, and other organizations.

Thematic Session I: Health Security: A perspective of vaccination

Communicable diseases pose significant threats to human health and may sometimes threaten international health security. In today’s global village, where the scale and speed of human migration is unprecedented in all directions, communicable diseases know no boundaries. Vaccination is one of the most effective and affordable methods to prevent the vaccine-preventable communicable diseases. This session will share good practices of vaccination schemes to increase vaccination coverage.


Thematic Session II: Health Development: A perspective of Maternal and Child Health

Though great achievements have been made in maternal and child health since the implementation of MDGs, great gaps exist between the developing regions and developed regions in this field and indicators of maternal and child health were developed in SDGs. In this session, participants will discuss how we can work together to further improve the maternal and child health, including improving the nutrition of the population to meet the SDGs.


Thematic Session III: Health Innovation: policy and actions

Innovation is the driving force of global sustainable health development. We encourage the “Belt and Road” countries to establish an innovation platform, to explore, invent and transform, and to share the innovation for global health development. This session will discuss the practice of innovation and what effects innovation brings to the Belt and Road countries and how the future will be shaped and connected through innovation.


Thematic Session IV: Hospital Cooperation

An active and systematic international exchange of hospital management will lead to a more optimized and rational operation of the health system and to the increase of the quality of health care. This session will discuss hospital management system, opportunities for international cooperation in the field of translational clinical research linked to the universities, and among hospitals.
